The History Of Bishopsgate Inn

Bishopsgate Inn has been in operation at this location since about 1960. The Kagels bought the Inn in 1995 updated its décor and amenities and have operated what Tourisim Magazines and Guides have called “…one of the finest Inns in New England. Known for their exceptional hospitality and four star Kitchen, customer service and amenities are always first class.“(NE Guide)

Built in 1818 by Horace Hayden, a merchant and shipbuilder, this exceptional Colonial Home welcomes guests seeking gracious hospitality and well appointed accommodations in a secluded setting in the middle of town. The Inn offers six guest rooms, four with open fireplaces, and a suite with a sauna and a deck. All have private baths. Tastefully furnished, each floor of the Inn has its own comfortable sitting area for conversation, reading and other restful pursuits. Known for its excellent kitchen, ample breakfasts are included with your room. The Inn is a perfect spot to plan your day. The Kagels maintain an up to date library of area offerings and can help you with information about the latest activities.

About Our Family

Bishopsgate Inn is first and foremost, a family business. The Kagels took over the operations in 1995- updating the B&B with a brand new menu, furniture and amenities. Initially a retirement project, restoring the establishment was a true labor of love and that commitment to authenticity is reflected in its atmosphere.

During a day at the Inn, each family member has a hand in making sure that guests have their best possible vacation experience. Each room has been carefully designed to reflect the charms of Historic New England and personalized with Kagel family heirloom furnishings and art that was hand-selected by Jane. Lisa and Jane are proud to be your personal New England concierge, providing you with a list of area activity recommendations that are delightfully relevant to your interests. Colin Jr. and Noah are avid cyclists and will be happy to recommend trails that match your skills and abilities. Sam, the youngest Inn Keeper, is happy to help in any way. Simply let us know how we can be of service, and our family will be there to assist yours.

Known for its kitchen and exceptional hospitality, Bishopsgate’s famous ample breakfasts are included with your room. Freshly prepared by Jane and Lisa – visitor favorites include Belgian waffles, eggs benedict and French toast. To end off your day on a sweet note, you will find a treat on your bed as you retire.

At Bishopsgate Inn, you’re sure to find your home away from it all. Our hospitality begins the minute you pick up the phone to make your reservation. Give us a call to find out why our visitors keep returning- we can’t wait to meet you.
