Below are just a few of the wonderful things you can do to pass the time while you’re with us. If you’re looking for recommendations on where to go and what to do, please don’t hesitate to ask. Goodspeed Opera House

World renown, The Goodspeed Opera House is a short stroll from Bishopsgate. Known for its fabulous musical theater productions it was the original home of Annie and Man of La Mancha. Its Norma Terris Theater in nearby Chester is known for developing new musicals and nurturing emerging artists.

Gillette Castle Park

Just a short drive from the Inn is Gillette Castle and Park. One of the most visited sites in Connecticut its grounds, views of the Connecticut River and the castle itself are magnificent.

Fresh Water & Salt Water Fishing

Fresh Water and Salt Water Fishing opportunities abound. For trout fishing Eight Mile River, The Farmington River and The Housatonic River all provide blue ribbon fisheries for the avid angler. A guest at the Inn will quickly note the fly-fishing books and art that reveal that it is a passion of the Kagel “boys”.

Salt Water Angling

For those more taken to Salt Water AnglingLong Island Sound and the lower reaches of the Connecticut River abound with stripped bass, bluefish and false albacore in season. There are many areas that can be fished profitably from the shore and the Kagels stand ready with advice.

Antique Shops

Antique shops abound in our immediate and general area. Jane and Lisa know them all. You only need ask and they will fill your day.  Many guests at Bishopsgate Inn make annual forays to scour the shops for that special something that someone absolutely has to have.

Parks, Forest & Winding Country Lanes

With Parks, Forests and winding country lanes the area naturally lends itself to Bicycling. The road cyclist will find both short and lengthy routes easily at hand. The Mountain Biker has easy access to all levels of challenge. Colin Jr. and Noah are avid cyclists and can direct guests of all levels to areas appropriate to their skills and interests. They also can help with minor repairs if required and can point out excellent Shops and repair and maintenance facilities. Small Tour groups are welcome if bookings permit.

Local Dining

Bishopsgate Inn guests have a wide selection of restaurants from which to choose. Specialties vary from the quick and simple to the elegant and complex. Just a short walk from Bishopsgate are the Gelston House (American Dining) and La Vita Gustosa Country Italian) and The River Tavern in Chester. Please let us know if we can help coordinate reservations for you during your stay at Bishopsgate Inn.

Historic Essex

A few minutes away is Historic Essex with its beautiful harbor, wonderful old houses, intriguing shops, the Essex Art Gallery, and the Connecticut River Foundation Museum at Steamboat Dock. A steam engine train and boat excursions are popular attractions. The Spa of Essex offers stress relief packages to refresh you for the activities ahead.

Museums, Art Galleries and More

The Florence Griswold Museum (the home of the Connecticut Impressionists), the Old Lyme Art Gallery, Mystic Seaport Museum and Marine life Aquarium are not far away. Stonington Village, a quaint old fishing port, and the U.S. Naval Submarine Base ( The Nautilus Museum) are quite close by. For those who feel lucky, it is also just a short trip to Mohegan Sun or Foxwoods Casino.


Golf at Fox Hopyard or Black Birch Golf Club will offer both challenge and plenty of fresh air for those dreaming of the PGA.
